Using Online Auctions to Keep Your Renovation Budget under Control

Renovating can add value to your property, but how do you keep the renovation budget under control? One strategy is to source items like appliances, tools, carpets, blinds for items new and second hand thru online auction sites.

"I picked up a whole house full of near new timber blinds on ebay for a fraction of the new 'shop' price..."

Some tips for successful auctioning

Wholesale & Bulk Lots
Sometimes buying a wholesale or bulk lot can work out cheaper than buying an individual item. For example recently I needed 6 timber blinds to replace some old curtains in a house I am renovating, so I purchased a bulk lot of 10 near new timber blinds on eBay for $170. They came out a  in a variety of window sizes, of which 5 were the right width and only required an adjustment to the length of the blind (this is quite easy). 1 was slightly too wide, so I cut it down to size (a bit harder) and adjusted the length. I re-advertised the other 4 blinds and recouped about $100. So the net cost was only $70 for 6 blinds.
