A Bench
Grinder is a good choice for sharpening hand tools,
blades, bits and cutters. They are also very good for
shaping, smoothing and polishing work pieces that can be
brought to the bench.
They are usually mounted
on the work bench and come in a variety of sizes
determined by the size of the grinding stone that fits
in them.
The bigger the motor the tougher material you will be
able to work with. Some come with a tool rest which
helps when you need to hold pieces steady for more
precise sharpening. Ones that come with a light that
allows you to see the work zone are handy also.
An Angle
Grinder is a good choice if you have jobs that can't
be easily be dragged to a bench. They are handheld tools
that range in size from very small to quite large.
Motors are rated in amps
and by the revolutions per minute. Bigger motors let you
do heavier materials without the tool slowing or
stalling. Some can vary their speed to suit working on
different materials which is very handy for the diy'er.
A Die
Grinder is more of a specialty handheld power tool.
It is designed to shape and polish the insides of
cylindrical objects. They have long thin spindles and
shafts that allow them to reach deep inside the work
piece. They can be very useful to the diy'er for sanding
or removing rust from small crevices in wood or metal

Key Tips
- A small to mid size bench
grinder is a useful addition to the DIY'ers workshop
- For those DIY'ers with an
Air Compressor a small die grinder is a
wonderful tool to have.
- Depending on the work load
you have planned for it, when you buy an angle
grinder you might consider a two cheap ones rather
than one expensive one. They may not last as long,
but if you have two, often you can save heaps of
time on a big job just by not having to change
between different attachments.
(don't compromise on safety features of course)
- Air driven grinders use lots
of air to run them, so they are good for small jobs
unless you have a big
Air Compressor.
