Buying a Chainsaw
A chainsaw is a portable power saw with metal teeth
linked to form a chain. They are very useful for cutting
down trees, removing branches and cutting fire wood.
Before you purchase a chainsaw you need to know what
you are using it for:
- What is the
largest material is that you
would be cutting?
- What the normal size you will most often be
cutting?
- What's your budget? figure out a price range.
Bigger isn't necessarily better, don't purchase a
chainsaw that is bigger than you will normally need. If you
are mostly cutting small
firewood the cost and safety of
using a very large chainsaw for the once every five
years is an unreasonable cost. Plus lugging around a
large chainsaw when you don't need one is painful.
I would recommend that you spend the extra money for a
chainsaw with more safety features.
An extra $50- $100 will get a
better made chainsaw the comes with
more safety features. (a
chain-break is a must)
When you purchase a chainsaw its a good idea to get the safety and
maintenance equipment (chaps,
eye/ ear protection, leather
gloves, file gauges/ guides, scrench, torx wrench, raker
file, tooth file, dolmar, oil
mix, bar oil...) at the same time.
Petrol or Electric?
One of the biggest problems confronting all
petrol-powered equipment is fuel storage. Aside from the
safety aspects that we all should be aware of, fuel
needs to be stored in approved containers in places that
do not promote condensation. A lot of times, when a
chainsaw or any engine wont start it is because the fuel
is stale or has water in it having been stored
improperly or for too long.
With an electric chain saw you save yourself
the problem of having to buy and store fuel. Of
course an electric chainsaw isn't too much use
at a distance from a powerpoint.
Electric Chainsaws are usually designed with lighter work in
mind.
