Buying an Air Compressor

(Transquip Direct has a range of home diy'er air compressors thru to large trade workshop air compressor units.)

The Air compressor has become part of the range of equipment available to the DIYer. Air Compressors produce an alternative form of energy, which is safe to use, clean, versatile and portable.

You can use them to power nail guns, paint spraying equipment, and air tools like drills, ratchets, grinders and more.

Parts of an Air Compressor

Generally consists of an air compressing unit, motor and a storage tank. A device on most air compressors maintains an air pressure range inside the storage tank, which allows tools attached to it to operate on demand. When a tool uses some of the air in the tank the motor kicks in to fill the tank back up again.

What Size Air Compressor should I buy?

What power supply is available? single phase 240v or three phase 415v? Generally speaking around the home single phase is available so then the largest air compressor you should buy is 2.2kW (3hp)

If three phase is available air compressors are available in larger capacities, but are generally not portable units.

If you are going to be using a compressor where there is no electrical source, then consider a petrol driven unit.

All of the tools that you will use on an air compressor will require pressure and a volume of air. Most compressors will supply the desired pressure for operation from the tank, but it is the volume of air produced by the compressor to keep up with the demand from the tools that differentiates each unit.

The volume of air that is produced is measured in litres per minute, cu metres/minute, or cu feet/minute (cfm).

It is determined by the size of the motor and the type of compressor fitted

Key Tips

  • Determine power supply 240v,415v or non-electric
  • Does it need to be portable?
  • Estimate the load from tools or accessories
  • Make sure you plan for future use requirements

Best Buy

For the Home DIYer doing some nail gun work, consider something like the TOOLEX PRO CRAFT 10CFM 6L TANK 2HP. Transquip Tools sells them for about $180
